Track 1 - Adjusting 101

Track 1 – Adjusting 101 - The “Business” of being an Independent Adjuster - Josh Shuck

This course will give Independent Adjusters a unique perspective on how to stay busy, get the jobs you want, and manage the business side of being an adjuster. It will cover how to complete onboarding documents in a way that gets deployments. We will discuss W9s as well as the pros and cons of working as an individual vs a corporation. We will also review what tools, subscriptions, certifications, and other training matters most. 

This course is not a traditional “client certification” or directly related to handling of a claim file, but it solves on of the largest hurdles to adjusters’ success. Many are not familiar with starting a business and operating as a 1099. When I have polled adjusters on what they would like to know more about, the questions of “how do I stand out” and “how do I manage my business” is the most common. I will cover the problems I see and help adjusters avoid common mistakes.

Track 1 - Adjusting 101 - Multidimensional Relationships of Adjusters. Connecting in a disconnected world.... - George Burgee, Clarissa Spehl, Dave Duray

This presentation will take a look at adjuster relationships from various perspectives.  The presenters will include myself, Director of CAT Operations, as well as and adjuster with 5 years’ experience. We will explore the adjuster relationships with vendors and how create a meaningful working relationship bringing value to the insured and the carrier by creating efficiencies in expediting the claims handling process. 

We will review how to get into the business, how to cultivate relationships with vendors, contractors, peers, and clients as you learn how to create value for yourself as an IA and the best ways to be successful as an adjuster in 2023.

Track 1 - Adjusting 101 - Introduction to Ethics for Insurance Adjusters - Alesha Lofton – CE APPROVED

This Introduction to Ethics for Insurance Adjusters course is intended for those Adjusters that have a Texas All-Lines Adjusters License as their resident home license or designated home license that are seeking a three-hour ethics course that meets Texas Department of Insurance Continuing Education requirements.

Track 1 - Adjusting 101 - Know Your Role -- Learning the Fundamentals of a Great Adjuster - Geoffrey Conrad, MBA, XAT, Laurie Doucet – CE APPROVED 

The purpose of this class is to train adjusters in the specific of handling claims for insurance carriers. The training is geared towards the field, in-office, and virtual claim handling. The training will include graded exercises with feedback provided throughout the course. Upon satisfactory completion, the adjuster will be prepared to handle claims both in the field or virtual/desk.

Track 1 - Adjusting 101 - You have your adjuster's license- now what? A walkthrough of the entire claim completion process! - Gary Callaway – CE APPROVED 

This all-day class is designed to simulate a field adjuster's first claim to ensure they understand what is involved to submit their first property claim.  Based on discussions with attendees at the 2022 NACA conference, it was clear to us that a large number of new adjusters had obtained their adjuster license(s), had basic Xactimate training but had no understanding of the workflow to submit their first claim.  Our presentation is designed to provide new adjusters with actual claim photos, diagrams, and scope notes to replicate them completing their first claim from A-Z in a classroom environment.  Adjusters will work through completion of a general loss report, Xactimate estimate and photo report while in class.

Track 1 - Adjusting 101- What Does My Policy Cover? - David James – CE APPROVED

Explore different types of policies, interpret them and be able to explain it to the policyholder.

Track 1 - Adjusting 101 - Don't Leave Trees Behind -- Covering Tree Damage and Tree Debris Removal - Geoffrey Conrad, MBA, XAT – CE APPROVED 

Coverage for trees can be confusing and it can "leave" you stumped! This 2-hour class session will address damages to trees, perils and tree coverage.  This course will also include properly estimating and enforcing tree debris policy limits using Xactimate.

Track 1 - Adjusting 101 - Vicarious Trauma: What it is, How it Happens, and How to Address It - Blythe Landry

This presentation will educate the group on the differences between vicarious trauma, secondary trauma, burnout and compassion fatigue. It will also review very common causes and responses to vicarious trauma, strategies and hands-on recommendations for responding to it in productive ways, as well as time for group questions, comments and engagement to offer group and individual support.

Track 1 - Adjusting 101 - A Different Approach to Teaching Property Coverage - Jim Chaney 

The traditional way to teach property coverage is to start with page one and read each paragraph in the order that it appears with an appropriate discussion.  There is nothing wrong with this method, but is there a better way?  In this session participants will be shown a different approach that takes things in a different order, focusing on doing a coverage analysis based on the insuring agreement.  This approach can be applied to Homeowners policies as well as the various commercial property forms.  Exactly what is this new approach?  Attend this session and find out!

Track 2 – Flood - Wind vs Water - Erik Moore – CE APPROVED 

This class reviews photographs and discusses how to identify wind damage vs water damage on the site of a hurricane loss.   The discussion will be led by photographic reviews of damage and expected audience participation.  Details of the damage reviewed are discussed and debated at length.  various case studies are examined some with different legal implications as well as a detailed study of wind vs water damage to a Hurricane Michal claim in Mexico Beach, Florida where only a slab foundation remained for inspection. At the conclusion of the program, the audience should be familiar with typical damage profiles of wind and water as well as interpreting techniques used to draw those conclusions.  This class is offered in a one hour or two-hour format.

While Appraisal Clause assignments were somewhat uncommon in the past, in the last five years, the frequency has increased significantly…up 2,000% in some states. Many experienced auto damage appraisers tend to avoid handling Appraisal Clause assignments due to unfamiliarity with the formal cradle to grave process. This session will outline in detail the entire process, to include:

- Why insureds evoke the Appraisal Clause in their auto policy.

- The steps to determine a proper valuation.

We will take the attendees through an entire claim from the moment it is received during the presentation to settling with the Insured while onsite. Track 4 – Technology - The Complexities of Building Codes and What it Means for Your Business - Jessi West Gunteski

As an adjuster, gathering building codes might be second nature to you. But, the manual processes and the back and forth with the contractor are frustrating and time-consuming. Not to mention, confusing. Garrett Kurtt, and all-around expert in the property restoration industry, has been on all sides fo the roofing claim and has identified the gaps in the systems that we use today to find and understand building codes and what they mean to roofing estimates. Garrett will break down the different elements of building codes from what it means to enforce a code and what it means for a code to be enforceable to when to include Ice and Water Shield on a roof. 

What is the difference between enforced codes and enforceable codes? What about manufacturer specifications and whether they require a code line item (like underlayment) or recommend a code line item to uphold their basic warranties for specific shingle types? What is the difference between repair or replacement for shingle types and wind warranties? Why is identifying the correct jurisdiction for a property the deciding factor in the accuracy of your estimate? 

Garrett will showcase specific tools that adjusters can use to overcome these questions and obstacles when building roofing estimates. With the right data, the right knowledge, and the right tools, you can stay on top of your game as an adjuster.

Track 5 – General 1 - It's Just Water! - Understanding and Writing Water Mitigation Estimates - Geoffrey Conrad, MBA, XAT, Scott Freeman – CE APPROVED 

Should these estimates from the mitigation contractors be this expensive? It’s just water! Let’s get an understanding of the different categories of water, the different classes of water, different types of mitigation equipment, and how long it takes to dry out a room. Each water category has its own challenges, and if you don’t know, you don’t know.   Let’s learn to prepare a fair and reasonable estimate on the front end so that we don’t have to address such a drastic supplement. Assessing common construction materials for distress/damage can be tricky.  These materials can exhibit distress in many different ways and for many different reasons, some of which include construction/installation deficiencies, deferred maintenance, long-term degradation, expansion/contraction, foundation movement, and much more.  This presentation will take a dive into the most common ways our building materials exhibit distress and how best to differentiate that from sudden/recent damage from an external source.

Track 5 – General 1 - Women's Leadership in Insurance - Jenny Pye

Why is this topic important to you whether you are a female or male leader? Having a deeper understanding of the potential barriers and traits – a man or woman need to possess to better develop themselves for leadership roles is imperative in today’s business environment.

The past two years have been marked by crisis and uncertainty where many women in the workplace find themselves at a crossroads. The pandemic has intensified inequities, and many women are experiencing distinct challenges navigating the blurred boundaries of work and home, feeling an unfair burden to maintain the demands of their own households, and adjusting to the dynamics of a hybrid work environment. The emerging new normal is shifting priorities and creating new pressures for women when leading, communicating and influencing.  

Track 5 – General 1- Common Flooring Failures - Erik Moore – CE APPROVED 

This class will discuss briefly the background of ceramic tile flooring in the US and proper installation of tile flooring and review installation guidelines provided by the Tile Council of North America as well as ANSI standards for tile installation. Movement joints within the tile fields will be discussed at length and students will be able to view movement joints as they are specified in building plans as well as joints installed in the real world.  Installation of ceramic tile will be reviewed on both concrete slabs and well as wood framing along with common issues that are overlooked during installation that lead to future failure of the flooring.  Several case studies of flooring failures will be reviewed.  

The second half of the class will discuss the different types of popularly used wood flooring products and their installation.   Proper installation methods of wood flooring over a wood framed floor and concrete slab will be discussed as well as common failures seen in wood flooring and repairability.  Several case studies are examined, and audience participation is encouraged.

Track 5 – General 1 - Commercial Property Large Loss - Unmasking Coverage, Investigation and Fraud Issues during Covid - Jenny Pye, Tim Moloney, Preston Hattaway, Steven Romero – CE APPROVED 

This large loss commercial property case study will focus on issues that are involved in the investigation and handling of a large commercial motel water loss related to a fire suppression system when complicated by covid restrictions, vacancy, potential fraud issues, lack of cooperation from the policyholder and their representatives and expansion of the potential scope of damages.

Track 5 – General 1 - Introduction to Water Damage Restoration - Josh Foote – CE APPROVED 

Learn the essentials of water damage restoration in this 4-hour introduction course. Students will learn industry standards based on the IICRC S500 Standard for Professional Water Damage Restoration. These principles include categories of water damage, classes of water damage, psychrometry (the science of moisture in the air), drying techniques, equipment, proper documentation, and safety.

The topics covered in this course will give students an understanding of industry standards, and how they apply on water damage restoration projects. These concepts hep students verify the property has been dried and restored using accepted practices, understand documentation from the project, and understand if equipment and drying estimates are properly charged.

Track 6 – General 2 - Taking Control of the Large Commercial Loss After A Hurricane - Jerry Provencher – CE APPROVED

This presentation will focus on a claim for a large shopping mall heavily damaged by Hurricane.  The claim was presented by hostile public adjusters and litigated to jury verdict in Harris County, Texas.  

The workshop focuses on means and methods available to the adjuster for overcoming situational impediments and steering a loss to a satisfactory conclusion or effective defense.  We will focus on the project management aspect of handling large commercial property losses. Adjusting large property losses calls on the adjuster to organize and direct the process of investigating, organizing and controlling the resources and procedures necessary for the adjustment of a complicated, high value claim.

Introducing students to adjusting commercial losses to include general common construction methods and materials used in modern commercial buildings vs residential.

Track 6 – General 2 - Roof Types/Materials/Systems, Damage Identification and Related Code Issues - Ben Anderson, Sdii Global Corporation – CE APPROVED

All modern roofing materials eventually exhibit issues associated with age, various environmental stresses, and/or inherent deficiencies in the materials or installation. Excessive external forces (those the system was not designed to resist) often result in failure to roofing systems even if they were properly installed and maintained. This short course is designed to provide the adjuster with useful information pertaining to roof cladding materials commonly used in the southeast United States, some insight into identification and classification of the different types of damage that can occur to roofs, as well as related code issues. The various types of roof cladding conditions to be discussed in this course include:

• Storm damage, including the effects of elevated wind forces, hail, and wind-borne debris;

• Mechanical damage, including installation issues and footfall, and (possible) intentional damage

• Deterioration due to age and/or inadequate/deferred maintenance and repairs.

This course is designed to prepare you for the daunting task of helping the insured pick up the pieces and help them restore their lives. This course will address how to write total losses and follow the guidelines (building codes and jurisdictional) for these types of losses. Understanding the specifics on how the homes are built based on the area in which the fire took place (solid foundation vs open or crawlspace). Understanding the issues that come up with Smoke Only claims. How to inspect and investigate both types of losses.

Track 6 – General 2 - Catastrophe Response - Carrier Perspective - Vicki Fisher, Christine Wertis, Matt Gray

In our presentation, we will discuss a carrier’s perspective on catastrophe response and how it relates to independent adjusting firms and individual adjusters. We will discuss ramp up strategies and how carriers and firms determine anticipated volume and potential impacts. It is important to understand the requirements and expectations carriers and firms may have for adjusters, such as experience level and commitment requirements. Knowing what those requirements may be and understanding their importance, will aid adjusters and the carriers they represent. This includes supplements and knowing what the expectations are for the field and desk adjuster. Carriers may require the field to obtain an agreed scope with the contractor or handle contents and ALE. Communication is key in all areas and this course will stress the importance.

There are a large number of issues, including legal, that many adjusters are not aware of, but carriers deal with on a day-to-day basis. Understanding these issues and the appropriate way to handle them is key to success for the carrier, field, and desk adjusters. We will discuss legal courses of action available in the policy and those applicable to specific states. Topics that will be included are non-assignability, anti-concurrent causation, appraisal, disaster mediation and litigation. Knowing what the carrier’s expectations are of adjusters when interacting with external legal parties is imperative.

To conclude our presentation, we will discuss the importance of quick contact and timely inspections as well as communicating with the carrier. Advising the carrier of any concerns the adjuster may have should be done as soon as possible to ensure prompt handling. We will also discuss working remote and what effect that may have on adjusters. We will discuss what adjusters can do to build their skills and to stand-out and be beneficial. Ultimately, our goal is to work hand in hand with independent adjusting firms and adjusters to service our policyholders.
